The HMI Bypass Module is a factory GM component that sits in the rear camera video path on IO5 and IO6 equipped vehicles built from approximately the 2017 model year forward. Camera video does not run directly to the HMI. It routes from the camera, to the bypass module, and then to the HMI.
Its purpose is regulatory. FMVSS 111 requires a compliant rear visibility system on all vehicles under 10,000 lbs GVWR built on or after May 1, 2018, including a requirement that the camera image display within 2.0 seconds of the backing event. GM infotainment of this era runs on a MOST ring network where a single failed node collapses the entire video path. Routing a federally mandated safety feature through that architecture would mean a weak battery, a failed amplifier, or one bad connector could also take the vehicle out of compliance. The bypass module gives camera video a path that survives an infotainment failure.
Why this matters during diagnosis:
- A working camera does not confirm a working HMI — the camera path is specifically engineered to survive the failure being diagnosed
- All camera views survive — including surround view on the small number of HMI-equipped vehicles that have it
- Everything else goes down — audio, chimes, Bluetooth, CarPlay, navigation, and settings all fail while the camera continues working normally
Owners frequently cite a working backup camera as evidence that their HMI must be healthy. It is not. A fully functional camera system alongside a completely dead infotainment system is a textbook presentation of HMI or MOST bus failure, not evidence against it.
The name causes confusion because “bypass” in the GM aftermarket usually refers to lockpick devices and video-in-motion workarounds. The HMI Bypass Module is unrelated to those — it is GM’s own name for a factory safety component and has nothing to do with unlocking features.
